Researchers at Northwestern University have unveiled a game-changing method for recycling PET plastic—one of the world’s most common and persistent pollutants. This innovative approach, which harnesses moisture from the air, promises a safer, more cost-effective, and sustainable solution to the global plastic waste crisis.

Unlike traditional recycling methods that use high temperatures, toxic solvents, and significant energy, Northwestern’s technique uses a simple, non-toxic catalyst and ambient moisture to break down PET plastic into its core building blocks—monomers. This not only reduces energy consumption but also eliminates harmful waste byproducts.

A Cleaner, More Efficient Process

The process is fast, effective, and scalable. In just four hours, researchers recovered 94% of possible monomers, and the catalyst used can be reused multiple times without losing effectiveness. This breakthrough could revolutionize the recycling industry, making PET plastic waste easier to process, even in mixed plastic streams—no sorting required.

“Unlike traditional methods, our approach is solvent-free and relies on moisture from the air, making it both eco-friendly and highly practical for real-world applications,” said Naveen Malik, the study’s lead author.
