Tech Giants Unite to Triple Nuclear Energy Capacity by 2050
At CERAWeek 2025 in Houston, some of the world’s biggest tech companies have signed a groundbreaking pledge to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This Large Energy Consumers Pledge, backed by industry leaders like Amazon, Google, Siemens Energy, and Meta, is the first time businesses outside the nuclear sector have publicly supported such a large-scale nuclear expansion.
The goal is clear: expand nuclear energy to meet the world’s growing energy demands while advancing the transition to net-zero carbon emissions.
Why Nuclear Energy?
Unlike solar and wind power, which rely on weather conditions, nuclear energy provides a steady, continuous supply of power—making it a key player in meeting the needs of energy-hungry industries like technology and manufacturing. It also promises energy security, reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.
Lucia Tian, Google’s Head of Clean Energy & Decarbonisation, said: “Nuclear power will be pivotal in building a reliable, secure, and sustainable energy future. We’re committed to advancing nuclear technologies to meet growing electricity demand worldwide.”
A Growing Movement
The push for nuclear energy expansion has gained momentum since the World Nuclear Symposium 2023 and further accelerated at COP28. Now, with the backing of major companies, over 30 countries, and leading financial institutions, the world is recognizing nuclear energy’s role in achieving both economic growth and sustainability.
Brandon Oyer of Amazon echoed this sentiment: “Accelerating nuclear energy development will be critical to strengthening national security, meeting future energy demands, and tackling climate change.”
The Road Ahead
Currently, nuclear energy accounts for just 9% of global electricity. However, with new innovations like small modular reactors (SMRs), nuclear’s role is set to grow dramatically, enabling cleaner, more scalable energy solutions.
