UK Set to Supercharge Zero-Emission Bus Production, Boost Jobs and Economy
The UK is gearing up to lead the charge in zero-emission bus manufacturing, with plans to create new jobs and transform local economies. At the inaugural UK Bus Manufacturing Panel, local leaders and industry experts discussed how to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of green transport technology.
Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood hosted the event in Sheffield, joined by metro mayors Oliver Coppard (South Yorkshire) and Tracey Brabin (West Yorkshire), as well as major players like Alexander Dennis and the Urban Transport Group. Together, they explored how to accelerate zero-emission bus production and create a more sustainable, accessible transport system across the UK.
Economic Benefits and Job Growth
The shift to zero-emission buses isn’t just about cleaner air—it’s also an economic opportunity. The new buses promise to support jobs in manufacturing, construction, and operations, driving local growth and helping the UK meet its ambitious green transport goals.
Minister Lightwood emphasized that this move would not only transform fleets but also boost regional economies and improve living standards across the country.
Bus Services Bill: A Greener Future
The event also comes ahead of the much-anticipated Bus Services Bill, set to reshape the industry by giving local authorities more control over bus services. The bill includes a groundbreaking measure to phase out new diesel and petrol buses by 2030, further propelling the UK’s journey toward a zero-emission future.
Additionally, the bill will introduce mandatory training to improve safety, including tackling anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls on buses.
A Greener, Stronger UK
With a £1bn government investment, plans to enhance bus services, and a focus on improving regional access, the UK is set to lead the global green transport revolution. The Bus Manufacturing Panel promises to keep the country ahead in zero-emission bus technology, ensuring cleaner air and new job opportunities for communities across the UK.
