King Charles III has expressed his admiration for Nigerian Pidgin English, crediting Afrobeats sensation Davido for sparking his interest in the language. The British monarch shared, “Davido has made me love Pidgin language. I would like to speak it when next I visit Nigeria. Thanks to Afrobeats, it’s becoming more popular around the world.”

His remarks came after the release of The King’s Music Room, a curated playlist on Apple Music featuring Davido’s hit song “Kante” alongside global icons like Beyoncé and Bob Marley. This selection highlights the King’s appreciation for the diverse sounds of the Commonwealth.

King Charles’ connection to Nigerian culture isn’t new. During a 2018 visit to Nigeria, he famously greeted an audience with “How you dey?” and “We de try,” further reflecting his effort to embrace the local culture.

His praise for Afrobeats and Pidgin English shows just how much Nigerian music and language are making waves globally.
