Tensions are rising in Kwara State as the opposition PDP calls for President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency over alleged links between government officials and criminal elements.
The controversy erupted after a viral video showed suspected bandits arrested in Auchi, Edo State, claiming they were supplied with AK-47 rifles and a government-branded patrol van by some Kwara State officials. The PDP linked the video to recent deadly attacks across multiple local government areas, including Ifelodun, Patigi, Edu, Ekiti, Isin, and Irepodun, citing the September 28 Oke-Ode attack, where over 15 people were reportedly killed.
PDP State Secretary, Abdulrahman Kayode, described the allegations as “grave and disturbing,” demanding federal investigation and a full audit of government-branded patrol vehicles, accusing the government of potentially undermining public confidence in security.
In response, Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq and his aides categorically rejected the claims, describing them as politically motivated and baseless. His Senior Special Assistant on Communications, Ibraheem Abdullateef, called it “fake news weaponized to incite fear and unrest”, while Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, denied any wrongdoing, stating that the state government does not issue AK-47s and no armed bandits were arrested in Ifelodun or elsewhere in Kwara.
The governor’s office emphasized that public safety and transparency remain top priorities, dismissing the PDP’s call as a desperate political tactic ahead of the 2027 general election.
