PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has sent shockwaves through the political landscape by crediting his return to power not just to the law, but to the "special favour" of President Bola Tinubu.1

Speaking to a packed audience during the combined 37th and 38th convocation of Rivers State University on Saturday, Fubara broke his silence on the political turbulence that nearly ended his administration.2

A Debt of Gratitude?

Addressing the crowd, Fubara admitted that his continued tenure as the presiding officer of Rivers State was hanging by a thread following a six-month emergency rule that briefly interrupted democracy in the state.3

"It is only by the special grace of God, and the special favour from Mr. President, that we are standing here still," Fubara declared. His comments suggest a hidden layer of high-level intervention by President Tinubu that de-escalated the fierce rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.4

Back to Business: Education and Infrastructure

Now that the dust has settled, the Governor is promising a "funding revolution" for Rivers State University.5 Key highlights of his speech included:

  • Full Funding: A commitment to cover all operational gaps in the university.6

  • Campus Expansion: A 2026 deadline to fix challenges at satellite campuses outside Port Harcourt.7

  • Student Welfare: Upgrading infrastructure and security to protect the over 13,000 new graduates entering the workforce.8

Governor Fubara urged the Class of 2025 to lead with integrity, reminding them that while political survival may require "special favour," national success requires hard work and honesty.9

WHAT'S YOUR TAKE?

Is Governor Fubara admitting that he owes his seat to President Tinubu? Does this "special favour" change how you view the independence of Rivers State politics?
