Minister of women affairs, Aisha Al-Hassan, popularly called Mama Taraba had last year pledged her loyalty to the former vice president Atiku Abubakar despite serving under Buhari's government. She equally withdrew her membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The letter read in part: "I purchased the nomination form, completed and submitted it, and I also presented myself for the party's screening last week Thursday, September 20. To my dismay and disappointment, I was disqualified and declared 'not cleared' by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Thursday, September 27. "Please, note that no reason was given for my resignation to contest under APC. I feel I was unfairly treated by the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC and grave injustice done to me by that action."

Meanwhile, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, said that the party had to disqualify the minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu and his women affairs counterpart, Aisha Al-Hassan, in order to protect the party’s core values. Oshiomhole said the party’s governorship screening committee was not convinced with explanations offered by Shittu that his service as lawmaker in the Oyo state assembly and minister was equivalent to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. According to him, Nigeria’s laws were clear on the issue of the NYSC.
