Why More Women Are Turning to Driverless Taxis for Safety

Women in cities like San Francisco are increasingly opting for autonomous taxis, like Waymo, over traditional ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft—and it’s all about safety. Many say they feel more at ease when they don’t have to share a car with a stranger, particularly a male driver, a concern that’s been a long-standing issue with ride-hailing apps.

Veronica Pastore, a San Francisco nonprofit worker, switched to Waymo six months ago and now prefers it for late-night rides. "I don’t have to worry about a stranger taking me home," she said, citing safety fears that others in her circle have faced with human drivers.

While violent incidents with ride-hail drivers are rare, women like Abby Vigil, 23, share stories of uncomfortable interactions, such as prying personal questions or unwanted advances. “It’s easier to feel like you’re in your own space,” she explained. That’s where autonomous taxis shine—no driver, no worries.

Waymo’s robotaxis are becoming the go-to choice for many, especially for those traveling alone or late at night. And with the rise of these driverless rides, some are even questioning the safety of traditional rideshare services. As autonomous vehicles expand, how will companies like Lyft and Uber adapt to the safety concerns raised by their riders?

Waymo seems to understand the appeal, especially for women, emphasizing its safety features and even collaborating with female-focused organizations to increase visibility. Women are now riding with Waymo as often as men, and the company is building a reputation for putting personal safety at the forefront.

As driverless taxis gain popularity, do you feel safer in a car without a driver? Or is there a risk we’re overlooking? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
