Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe has fiercely criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s move to withdraw Senator Natasha Akpoti’s security detail, calling it an abuse of power. Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Ogunlewe slammed Akpabio for overstepping his authority, saying, “You are not the IGP,” referring to the Inspector General of Police, who is responsible for security arrangements for Senators.
Ogunlewe further pointed out that Akpabio does not have the power to dictate Akpoti’s salary, which is determined by the Revenue Mobilization and Allocation Commission, nor can he strip her of her constitutional status as a duly elected senator. “How can you say they should not pay her salary?” he questioned, urging Akpabio to respect the legal processes that govern such matters.
His comments echo concerns from former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, who previously argued that Akpoti remains a senator under the constitution despite her suspension.
Do you agree with Senator Ogunlewe’s stance, or do you think Akpabio’s actions are justified? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
