The World Igbo Youth Council (WIYC) is making bold demands for justice, calling for a $10 trillion compensation for the Igbo nation over the aftermath of the 1966 coup and the subsequent Nigeria-Biafra War. In a statement released on Sunday, the group called on President Bola Tinubu to issue a formal apology and provide reparations for the suffering endured by the Igbo people, including the tragic loss of approximately 3.8 million lives during the war.
WIYC plans to stage peaceful protests starting on March 17, 2025, across key cities in the South-East, Abuja, and Lagos. The group emphasizes that this movement is not just about financial restitution but a necessary acknowledgment of the deep scars left by the war and the continued marginalization of the Igbo people.
In the statement, President General Princess Eberechukwu Dickson highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by the Igbo, from economic disenfranchisement to political exclusion, citing issues like the closure of the Calabar Seaport and the lack of fair representation in leadership.
The group is also pushing for the full implementation of the 2017 ECOWAS verdict, which mandates reparations for Biafra War victims.
As the protests loom, the WIYC is calling for national reconciliation, urging the government to take moral responsibility and address these long-standing grievances.
What do you think about the WIYC’s demands? Is it time for the government to take action, or is there a better path to reconciliation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
