Abacha Family Slams IBB, Denies Allegations in New Book
The family of the late General Sani Abacha has strongly rebuked former Military President Ibrahim Babangida over claims made in his recent memoir, A Journey in Service. In the book, Babangida alleged that General Sani Abacha was responsible for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, a claim that has sparked controversy and criticism.
In a statement released by Mohammed Abacha on Sunday, the family described Babangida’s allegation as false and a deliberate attempt to distort history. The family clarified that Abacha was not the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time of the annulment and that it was Babangida’s administration that held full executive power.
The statement further warned against revisionist narratives aimed at manipulating public opinion for political purposes, urging Nigerians to remain cautious of attempts to rewrite the events of that critical period in Nigeria’s history. The Abacha family also reminded the public of how General Sani Abacha saved Babangida’s life when his safety was under threat.
"We regret that Babangida’s book failed to provide an honest account of history," the family said, emphasizing that integrity and truth were missing from the memoir.
What are your thoughts on the Abacha family’s response? Is it time to revisit the history of June 12, or do you think the past should remain in the past? Share your views in the comments!
