Following the failed coup attempt in neighboring Benin Republic, the Yoruba Union has sent a high-voltage "wake-up call" to Aso Rock, warning that Nigeria’s rising poverty and suppressed dissent are creating a dangerous recipe for unrest.

The Yoruba Union (Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá) has broken its silence, urging President Bola Tinubu to look closely at the chaos in West Africa as a sign of things to come if Nigerian citizens continue to suffer under "pro-poverty" policies.

In a scathing statement, the group’s Convener, Olusola Badero, and Home Director, Princess Balogun, argued that the disillusioned state of Nigerians is reaching a breaking point.

⚠️ The Benin Coup: A "Wake-Up Call"

The Union described the recent events in Benin Republic as a mirror reflecting the continental rejection of leaders who enrich themselves while citizens starve. They warned that while they do not advocate for military takeovers, prolonged neglect often makes citizens see "undemocratic alternatives" as a solution.

“Ignoring the needs of citizens... could, God forbid, push people to support extreme measures if the government fails to fulfill its constitutional obligations,” the Union warned.

📉 "Hospitals Are Dilapidated, Politicians Travel Abroad"

The group slammed both the current and previous administrations for overseeing what they called the "decay" of public infrastructure. They pointed to the alarming trend of:

  • Hospitals without equipment while taxpayers fund first-class medical trips for politicians.

  • Negotiating with terrorists while ordinary citizens live in constant fear.

  • Manipulating the DSS and Police to silence calls for good governance.

The Union warned that democracy is meant to guarantee accountability, but when state institutions are used to suppress dissent, people feel "betrayed and unsafe."

🛑 "Leaders Must Act Now"

The Union urged the Tinubu administration to immediately reverse policies that have left millions vulnerable, improve healthcare, and address the massive dropout rates among school children. They concluded that Nigeria’s "democratic experiment" remains under threat as long as social inequality continues to widen.

❓ WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

Do you agree with the Yoruba Union that the suffering in the land is a threat to our democracy? Should the failed coup in Benin Republic be a lesson for Nigeria’s leadership? Let us hear your voice in the comments! 👇🇳🇬
