LAGOS, NIGERIA — Embattled human rights activist, Harrison Gwaminshu, who was recently detained by police over allegations of siphoning a ransom, has finally broken his silence, revealing a stunning explanation for the missing N5.4 million!

Gwaminshu was arrested earlier this week after being accused of deducting the substantial sum from the ransom paid for the release of an Edo couple kidnapped last month in the Aviele community. The total demanded by the kidnappers was a reported N50 million.

The Tracking Modus Operandi

According to a confession recounted by his lawyer to Ossai Ovie, a media aide to the Delta State Governor, Gwaminshu's move was part of a high-tech rescue strategy, not theft.

Ovie shared the activist’s defense on his Facebook page, claiming Gwaminshu’s operation involves:

  • Chip Insertion: Removing a large part of the actual cash and replacing it with "prototype look alike" money where a tracking chip is securely inserted to trace the kidnappers.

  • The Plan: The removed money (N5.4M) was to be returned to the family after the successful operation.

A Turn of Events

Gwaminshu reportedly executed this 'modus operandi' in the presence of a family member. However, when the police questioned the family member, he claimed Gwaminshu was "backing him" and he couldn't see the process clearly.

Tragedy followed the payment: only the pregnant wife was released, and the man remains in captivity. It was the man’s own brother who first raised the alarm about the incomplete ransom, a fact now fueling speculations of an 'insider job'.

Voluntarily Returned Money

Gwaminshu initially hesitated to reveal his tracking method to the police but allegedly did so after the family started threatening him. He then voluntarily went to his hotel room in Auchi, retrieved the N5.4 million, and handed it over to the police before leaving town.

However, the drama didn't end there. Gwaminshu claims the police later forced him to reenact the return of the money for photographs and attempted to make him sign a search warrant falsely stating they recovered the money from his hotel room.

Gwaminshu’s ally, Ossai Ovie, insists the chip is still active, offering a potential lifeline to track the remaining victim.

❓ What's your take? Is Harrison Gwaminshu a dedicated crime fighter using unconventional means, or is this a cover story for a crime?

Should the focus shift from the activist back to rescuing the kidnapped man using the alleged tracking chip? Let us know in the comments! 👇
