An 11-member Independent Judicial Accountability Panel, including three retired justices, has voiced concerns over the Supreme Court’s recent ruling regarding the political crisis in Rivers State. In a statement issued on March 14, 2025, the panel, led by retired Justice Mojeed Owoade, criticized the apex court for not directly addressing key issues in the case, particularly the defection of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
While the Supreme Court made comments on the defection issue, the panel argued that it failed to resolve the matter and questioned why the court issued statements without concrete evidence or addressing pending litigations. They further criticized the court for issuing orders without clear reasoning, warning that such decisions could erode public trust in the judiciary.
This critique intensifies the debate surrounding the judiciary’s handling of the Rivers State political crisis, with experts and the public calling for clearer, more precise judgments, especially in politically sensitive cases.
