PDP, APC Clash Over Call for Removal of Plateau Speaker
A political showdown erupted on Monday between the Plateau State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over calls for the removal of Speaker Gabriel Dewan. The APC has been pushing for Dewan’s removal to align the leadership with its dominance in the 24-member Plateau State House of Assembly, where it holds 22 seats, while the Labour Party and Young People’s Party each have one representative.
Dewan, a member of the Young People’s Party, has served as Speaker despite the APC’s overwhelming majority. The PDP, however, has strongly condemned the APC’s call, warning that such actions could destabilize the state.
In a statement, PDP’s State Secretary, Emma Tuang, expressed concerns that the removal would threaten the hard-earned stability and progress the state has made. "We urge the APC to prioritize Plateau’s progress over partisan ambition," Tuang stated, calling for unity and collaboration for the state’s continued growth.
The APC, however, shot back with accusations of hypocrisy, claiming the PDP had manipulated the political system for its own benefit. APC’s State Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, criticized the PDP’s stance on leadership distribution, pointing to what it described as oppression against the Southern Zone, which should have produced the Speaker.
What do you think of the APC and PDP’s battle over Plateau’s leadership? Do you support Dewan’s position as Speaker, or do you think it’s time for a change? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
