In a dramatic clash between the Executive and the Judiciary, the Supreme Court has overturned President Bola Tinubu's controversial reduction of Maryam Sanda's sentence, affirming she must face the death penalty for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

The long-running, highly emotional case of Maryam Sanda, the Abuja housewife convicted of the 2017 murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, took a stunning turn today at the Apex Court.

🚨 Tinubu's Pardon Overridden

Sanda was originally sentenced to death by hanging in 2020.1 However, President Tinubu recently used his executive power to commute her sentence to 12 years' imprisonment on grounds of "compassion."

In a landmark decision delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court, in a decisive four-to-one split judgement, dismissed Sanda's final appeal and affirmed the original death sentence.2

⚖️ Justice Moore Adumein's Ruling

Justice Moore Adumein, delivering the lead judgment, held that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, validating the earlier rulings by both the FCT High Court and the Court of Appeal. The appeal filed by Sanda was dismissed as "without merit."

This ruling not only ends Sanda's last legal avenue for freedom but also sets a profound precedent regarding the limits of executive clemency versus the final judgment of the highest court.

❓ WHAT IS YOUR TAKE?

Did the Supreme Court make the right call by affirming the death penalty, overriding the President's compassionate gesture? Does this ruling strengthen the independence of Nigeria's Judiciary? Share your thoughts below! 👇
