Nnamdi Kanu has decided to personally represent himself in his appeal against his life sentence, according to his former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.1 But a major legal hurdle has emerged: the activist is detained over 700 kilometers away from the court!

The legal battle surrounding the incarcerated separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu has taken a dramatic turn. In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Kanu’s former legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed the activist's surprising decision to invoke his constitutional right to self-representation.

🏛️ "It Is His Right": The Constitutional Clash

Ejimakor confirmed that Kanu intends to file his appeal personally before hiring a lawyer later, a move he says is fully protected under Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Nnamdi Kanu said, ‘I want to file my appeal myself and look for a lawyer later.’ It is his right,” Ejimakor stressed, demanding the system respect the decision.

🛣️ 700KM Hurdle: The Detention Dilemma

However, Ejimakor warned that the Nigerian state is currently making it "extremely difficult" for Kanu to exercise this right. Kanu is being held in a custodial center in Sokoto, nearly seven hundred kilometers away from Abuja, where the Court of Appeal has jurisdiction.

Ejimakor argues that this distance effectively denies Kanu access to his critical support structure—family, personal doctors, and legal advisers—all based in Abuja.

The former lawyer insisted that the state has an obligation to remove all obstructions. He called for Kanu's relocation to a facility closer to Abuja, stating it is the only way to ensure the fairness and credibility of the judicial process.2

❓ WHAT IS YOUR TAKE?

Should the government immediately relocate Nnamdi Kanu closer to Abuja to facilitate his right to self-representation, or are security concerns paramount? Is this a genuine exercise of his constitutional right or a deliberate legal strategy? Share your opinion below! 👇
