Leaders Demand Independent Probe of ALL Govt Accounts (2015-2025) to Expose Selective Justice Plot

A formidable coalition of Nigeria's opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi, has issued a scathing joint statement, directly accusing the Tinubu administration of using state institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the "systematic persecution" of political adversaries.

In the strongly worded statement, titled "Anti-Corruption, Not Anti-Opposition," the leaders raised an urgent alarm, stating that state power is being deployed not to prevent crime, but to eliminate opposition voices and ultimately dismantle Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

The 'Dangerous Agenda'

The opposition detailed a disturbing pattern, alleging that the anti-corruption apparatus is being used to secretly intimidate opposition governors, forcing them into defection to the ruling APC. They argued that recent high-profile defections reinforce public suspicion that political pressure, not genuine ideological change, is behind the realignment.

The leaders heavily criticized the perceived "Weaponisation of the EFCC," citing the infamous statement by a former APC National Chairman: "Once you have joined APC, all your sins are forgiven." They pointed to recent examples where ministers implicated in scandals were forced to resign only by public outrage, yet remain uncharged by the EFCC and are allegedly active in the President’s campaign. They contrast this with the aggressive, media-fueled prosecution of opposition figures, describing it as selective justice that has severely eroded the EFCC's independence.

🛡️ Key Demands to Save Democracy:

To halt this alleged threat, the opposition coalition laid out five critical demands:

  1. Depoliticise EFCC: Urgently shield the EFCC from political interference and stop using it to serve the whims of any single party.

  2. Embed Anti-Graft Operatives: Amend the EFCC Act to allow anti-graft operatives to be embedded directly into government payment and expenditure processes (Federal, State, and LGs) to ensure real-time compliance and prevention.

  3. Independent Review Body: Establish a body (chaired by an eminent judge and including civil society, NBA, ICAN, etc.) to conduct a comprehensive, transparent review of ALL public accounts from 2015 to 2025.

  4. Expose Selective Prosecution: The review body's mandate is to publish findings that will expose the alleged selective prosecution of opposition figures and reveal that many current ruling party officials should have long been charged.

  5. Defend Multiparty Democracy: Call for eternal vigilance against the alleged transformation of Nigeria into a de facto one-party state.

The leaders concluded with a rallying cry, urging all patriotic Nigerians to stand firm, warning that "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil," and promising to engage international partners, including the US, UK, EU, and World Bank, over the EFCC’s perceived role in undermining democracy.
